It was directed by Luca Guadagnino and written by James Ivory, based on the novel of the same name by André Aciman (2007). The film is an international production and belongs to Guadagnino’s «Desire» trilogy along with Io sono l’amore (2009) and Blinded by the Sun (2015).
The film had been in development since 2007, when producers Peter Spears and Howard Rosenman acquired the rights to the novel. Ivory was tapped to direct it but ultimately served as screenwriter. Guadagnino, who was to serve as location consultant, was chosen as director in 2016. Filming took place in Crema between May and June 2016. The film was shot on 35mm reels under the command of cinematographer Sayombhu Mukdeeprom.
Elio and Oliver start spending time together. Elio begins a sexual relationship with Marzia and brags about it in front of Oliver to gauge his reaction. During a trip to the post office, Elio subtly confesses his feelings for Oliver, who gently tells him that he should not act on them.
